History of Alpha Chi Omega

Alpha Chi Omega was founded at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana on October 15, 1885. A group of seven women came together with the purpose of founding the first fraternity at the school of music. Anna Allen, Olive Burnett, Bertha Denniston, Amy Dubois, Bessie Grooms, Nellie Gamble, and Estelle Leonard were the founders of Alpha Chi Omega.   Alpha Chi Omega's Founders chose "Alpha" (Α), the first letter of the Greek alphabet, because they were forming the first fraternity in the school of music. Since they thought they might also be founding the last such fraternity, "Omega" (Ω) seemed appropriate. "Kai", meaning "and" was added to form the beginning and the end. "Kai" was soon changed to "Chi" (Χ), a letter of the Greek alphabet. Today, Alpha Chi Omega has 135 collegiate chapters and over 200,000 members. Our chapter, Gamma Upsilon, was founded on February 11, 1956. Our chapter initiated the building of Bayou Oaks Apartments which is where Alpha Chi Omega's home has been located since 2003. Not only have we created a community for ourselves but for all of Greek life as well. Alpha Chi Omega is a national women's organization that enriches the lives of members through lifetime opportunities for friendship, leadership, learning, and service.
